The 2011 telemetry studies will include the
application of acoustic tags to some sockeye in
marine waters and radio-tags to sockeye and coho
captured using angling and beach seines in the lower
Fraser River. The radio-tagged sockeye and coho
will be tracked by fixed-station receivers deployed
between Mission and Spences Bridge on the Thompson
River.
The fishwheel operations are being conducted by
LGL Limited, working in collaboration with the
Matsqui First Nation, with funding provided by
Pacific Salmon Foundation, LGL Limited, Pacific
Fisheries Resource Conservation Council and several
private contributors.
The 2011 sockeye radio-telemetry studies are
being conducted by UBC and Carleton University, with
assistance from LGL Limited, funding from the
Pacific Salmon Foundation and NSERC and further
support by DFO. Information obtained through this
study will directly contribute to improved
management and conservation of Fraser River salmon.
UBC and Carleton University will be applying
acoustic tags to sockeye caught in marine areas and
radio-tags to coho caught as bycatch in the lower
Fraser River beach seine fisheries for pink salmon.
You can help the study and qualify for a reward by cooperating with catch monitoring efforts and returning radio and acoustic tags. See the following links for information on returning tags:
