What is the definition of "escapement"?
There are three types of escapement that are used in the management of Fraser sockeye stocks:
Spawning Escapement - the number of fish arriving at a natal stream or river to spawn.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada conducts the spawning ground surveys that produce the spawning escapement estimates for Fraser River sockeye and pink salmon. These numbers represent the number of fish which have escaped the fisheries and are available for spawning. These estimates are provided on their website at: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fraserriver/
Gross Escapement at Mission - the number of fish estimated to have migrated past the PSC's hydroacoustic facility at Mission (this is the number reported on the PSC web site)
Gross Escapement into the Fraser River - the number of fish estimated to have migrated past the PSC's hydroacoustic facility at Mission, plus the estimated catch in First Nations fisheries in the Fraser River downstream of Mission (this is the escapement target that the Fraser River Panel manages towards).
